Mediating Effects of Self-leadership on the Relationship between Nurses" Core Self-evaluation and Innovative Behaviour

Koh Myung-Suk
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effects of self-leadership on core self-evaluations and innovative behaviour. The subjects of the study were 509 nurses working at three 400- to 500-bed general hospitals in Seoul. The data was collected from April 8-18, 2010. The measurement tools were: Core Self-evaluations developed by Judge (1997); Self-leadership evaluation developed by Prussia (1998); and Core Innovative Behaviour Measurement developed by Scott and Bruce (1994). The data was analyzed with SPSS 12.0 software and LISREL 8.8 software.
The findings were as follows: 1) Core self-evaluation affected self-leadership positively, and self-leadership positively influenced innovative behaviour. However, core self-evaluation had no direct impact on innovative behaviour. 2) Self-leadership made a partial mediation on the relationship between core self-evaluation and innovative behaviour. The findings of the study helped the researchers to understand innovation behaviour and revealed how core self-evaluation and self-leadership were related to the individual nurses" innovative behaviour. On the basis of these findings, the study suggested that various motivation systems and educational programs should be developed and administered so that nurses can promote and demonstrate both self-leadership in the workplace and innovative behaviour. It also suggested that further studies should be done to develop these programs.
